Connect Lithium Battery in Series

Purpose: To increase the overall voltage of the battery pack while keeping the same capacity (Ah).

How to Connect:

  1. Ensure Compatibility: Make sure all the lithium batteries are of the same type, capacity, and ideally, have the same state of charge. Mixing different batteries can lead to imbalance, underperformance, or even damage.
  2. Positive to Negative Connection: Take the positive terminal (+) of the first battery and connect it to the negative terminal (-) of the second battery using a connector or a wire.
  3. Repeat for Additional Batteries: If connecting more than two batteries in series, continue to connect the positive terminal of one battery to the negative terminal of the next in the chain.
  4. Connect to the Device: The remaining free positive and negative terminals on the battery pack (first and last battery in the series) will be used to connect to the device or system you’re powering.

Considerations: When connected in series, the voltage sums up, but the capacity (Ah) remains the same. For example, connecting four 3.7V, 10Ah batteries in series results in a pack that is 14.8V, 10Ah.

Connecting Lithium Batteries in Parallel

Purpose: To increase the overall capacity (Ah) of the battery pack while maintaining the same voltage.

How to Connect:

  1. Ensure Compatibility: As with series connections, make sure all batteries are of the same type and capacity. Ideally, they should also be at the same state of charge.
  2. Positive to Positive, Negative to Negative: Connect all the positive terminals of the batteries together, and all the negative terminals together. This can be achieved using bus bars, wires, or suitable connectors that can handle the anticipated current.
  3. Battery Management System (BMS): It’s highly recommended to use a BMS for both series and parallel connections to protect and manage the battery pack. A BMS ensures that each cell is balanced and not overcharged or over-discharged, significantly improving the safety and lifespan of the pack.

Considerations: When connected in parallel, the capacity (Ah) sums up, but the voltage remains the same. For example, connecting four 3.7V, 10Ah batteries in parallel results in a pack that is 3.7V, 40Ah.

  • Always use batteries of the same chemistry, capacity, and brand if possible.
  • Check the voltage and state of charge of each battery before connecting them together.
